The boreal forest is the second-largest terrestrial biome on Earth and covers a 14 million km2 belt, representing about 25% of the Earth’s forest area. Two-thirds of this forest biome is managed and supplies 37% of global wood production. These forests also provide a range of natural resources and ecosystem services essential to humanity. However, climate change is altering species distributions, natural disturbance regimes, and forest ecosystem structure and functioning. Although sustainable management is the main goal across the boreal biome, a novel framework is required to adapt forest strategies and practices to climate change.    This collaborative effort draws upon 148 authors in summarizing the sustainable management of these forests and detailing the most recent experimental and observational results collected from across the boreal biome. It presents the state of sustainable management in boreal forests and highlights the critical importance of this biome in a context of global change because of these forests' key role in a range of natural processes, including carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and the maintaining of biodiversity. This book is an essential read for academics, students, and practitioners involved in boreal forest management. It outlines the challenges facing sustainable boreal forest management within the context of climate change and serves as a basis for establishing new research avenues, identifying future research trends, and developing climate-adapted forest management plans.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":55086261502325,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":55086262026613,"sku":"NIN9783031159879","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/303115987X.jpg?v=1739764179"},{"product_id":"boreal-forests-in-the-face-of-climate-change-book-miguel-montoro-girona-9783031159909","title":"Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change","description":"This open access book explores a new conceptual framework for the sustainable management of the boreal forest in the face of climate change. It stresses China’s importance to global food security because of its population size. The chapter introduces the contents of the volume and then treats briefly food security in ancient and dynastic (211 bc–1912) China. It examines environmental stressors, such as population growth, natural disasters, and insect pests as well as imperial responses (for example, irrigation, flood control, storage and transportation systems). The chapter also briefly int- duces the Republican era (1912–1949) and compares environmental stressors and government responses then to those of the imperial period. Keywords Food system • Food security • Food production regions • Environmental stressors (Population growth • Natural disasters • Insect pests and Plant diseases • Deforestation • Climate change) • Irrigation systems • Flood control • Grand Canal 1. 1 The Problem of Food Security and Environmental Change Food is the material basis to human survival, and in each nation-state, providing a system for the development, production, and distribution of food and its security is a primary national objective. Many forces have influenced the food security of peoples since ancient times, with particular challenges from natural disasters (floods, famines, drought, and pestilence) and growing populations globally.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":55761179148661,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":55761179410805,"sku":"NLS9781402091797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":56942719598965,"sku":"NIN9781402091797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9781402091797.jpg?v=1754903414"},{"product_id":"microwave-radiometry-of-vegetation-canopies-book-alexander-a-chukhlantsev-9781402046810","title":"Microwave Radiometry of Vegetation Canopies","description":"Research into microwave radiation from the Earth’s surface in the presence of vegetation canopies, as well as the development of algorithms for retrieval of soil and vegetation parameters from microwave radiometric measurements, have been actively conducted for the last 30 years by scientific groups worldwide. The capability of the microwave radiometric method to determine soil moisture and vegetation biometric indices was revealed 25 years ago by the author and his colleagues. Soil moisture and vegetation covers play a key role in the hydrological cycle and in water and energy transfer on the border of land surface and atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Accomplishment of large international projects shows that microwave radiometry of soil and vegetation has become an instrument of practical application and operational use.    A systematic account of questions concerning the microwave radiometry of the Earth’s surface in the presence of vegetation canopies is the main objective of the book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":55761530356085,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":55761530683765,"sku":"NLS9781402046810","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9781402046810.jpg?v=1754905570"},{"product_id":"mountains-sources-of-water-sources-of-knowledge-book-ellen-wiegandt-9781402067471","title":"Mountains: Sources of Water, Sources of Knowledge","description":"The idea for Mountains: Sources of Water, Sources of Knowledge began with the constitution of the Association Montagne 2002, whose mission was to celebrate the International Year of Mountains in the alpine canton of Valais, Switzerland.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":56942943764853,"sku":"NIN9781402067471","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9781402067471.jpg?v=1774006926"},{"product_id":"scattered-and-filtered-solar-uv-measurements-book-alfio-v-parisi-9781402018190","title":"Scattered and Filtered Solar UV Measurements","description":"Scattered and Filtered Solar UV Measurements provides comprehensive information about the scattered and filtered solar UV environment, the techniques to measure this radiation and the resulting UV exposures to humans. The incidence of skin cancer and sun-related eye disorders can be reduced by the minimization of exposures to UV radiation. For this to occur, a greater understanding of the solar UV exposure to humans for varying conditions and in different environments is necessary. Accordingly, this book aims to quantify, understand and provide information on the filtered and scattered solar UV.  This book is aimed at students and new researchers in the field of solar UV and environmental measurements; however there is sufficient detail to provide a valuable reference for the experienced researcher. Researchers and students in atmospheric sciences, health sciences, environmental monitoring, photobiology and skin cancer prevention will find this monograph useful.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":56945063985525,"sku":"NIN9781402018190","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9781402018190.jpg?v=1774017419"},{"product_id":"geological-disposal-of-carbon-dioxide-and-radioactive-waste-a-comparative-assess-book-ferenc-l-toth-9789048187119","title":"Geological Disposal of Carbon Dioxide and Radioactive Waste: A Comparative Assessment","description":"Fossil fuels will remain the backbone of the global energy economy for the foreseeable future. The contribution of nuclear energy to the global energy supply is also expected to increase. With the pressing need to mitigate climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the fossil energy industry is exploring the possibility of carbon dioxide disposal in geological media.   Geological disposal has been studied for decades by the nuclear industry with a view to ensuring the safe containment of its wastes. Geological disposal of carbon dioxide and that of radioactive waste gives rise to many common concerns in domains ranging from geology to public acceptance. In this respect, comparative assessments reveal many similarities, ranging from the transformation of the geological environment and safety and monitoring concerns to regulatory, liability and public acceptance issues. However, there are profound differences on a broad range of issues as well, such as the quantities and hazardous features of the materials to be disposed of, the characteristics of the targeted geological media, the site engineering technologies involved and the timescales required for safe containment at the disposal location.   There are ample opportunities to learn from comparisons and to derive insights that will assist policymakers responsible for national energy strategies and international climate policies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":56984502436213,"sku":"NIN9789048187119","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9789048187119.jpg?v=1774240690"},{"product_id":"climate-change-and-food-security-book-david-b-lobell-9789048129515","title":"Climate Change and Food Security","description":"This book explores the different methodologies and data used to understand climate's effect on food security. Widespread poverty, an extensive disease burden and pockets of political instability across the continent has resulted in a low resilience and limited adaptative capacity of African society to climate related shocks and stresses.  To compound this vulnerability, there remains large knowledge gaps on African climate, manifestations of future climate change and variability for the region and the associated problems of climate change impacts.  Research on the subject of African climate change requires an interdisciplinary approach linking studies of environmental, political and socio-economic spheres.  In this book we use different case studies on climate change and variability in Africa to illustrate different approaches to the study of climate change in Africa from across the spectrum of physical, social and political sciences.  In doing so we attempt to highlight a toolbox of methodologies (along with their limitations and advantages) that may be used to further the understanding of the impacts of climate change in Africa and thus help form the basis for strategies to negate the negative implications of climate change on society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":56984914428277,"sku":"NIN9789048138418","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0810\/6996\/5613\/files\/9789048138418.jpg?v=1774243191"}],"url":"https:\/\/stage.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/advances-in-global-change-research-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books Staging","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
